Even as Climate Victory arrives in Brazil Election, Climate Change Denier Republicans on US Ballot Pose Threat to Children
Don’t Tread on Defenseless Children
Defenseless children in the US and world face an increasing risk that future climate change will kill some of them, but now, real hope arises. For, a dramatic lessening of Amazon rainforest deforestation, which fuels global warming, is expected after the recent defeat of Brazil’s right wing in the election victory of Lula da Silva.
Nevertheless, the US right wing poses a threat to gain control of Congress in the November 8 election.
The US right wing recently opposed even the inadequate $30 billion per year in a recent law on federal funds to try to curb climate change. The folly of that opposition is illuminated by the $50 billion price tag (approx) in about one day from the even more recent Hurricane Ian.
Penny-wise, pound foolish.
Even as that foolishness is displayed for the world, the ancient innocence of children appears this month, as a friendly kid in Cambodia proudly shows his catch to lucky passerby photographer Daniel Sebold. Children’s innocence is widespread, as more kids in Cambodia give friendly smiles during the marvels of bicycle riding.

Even as children’s innocence speaks to the world, the refusal of the governments of Brazil and the US to take adequate action on the worldwide climate emergency has contributed to the Amazon rainforest drawing near to the tipping point. Indeed, the world has squandered 4 of the 12 years remaining in which to take significant action to curb climate change, as warned by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October 2018.[i]
Climate change is not child’s play.
What will the remaining eight years, under the dramatic IPCC warning, do to the fate of today’s children? A recent work explains part of the threat.[ii]
The Climate Change Performance Index, compiled by the Climate Action Network, ranks countries for their actions on climate change, including their climate policies, energy use, and greenhouse gas emissions. Of the sixty countries measured, the United States and Saudi Arabia are fifty-ninth and sixtieth, respectively, on the list.
As innocent children grow into youth, they are not immune to being shocked by the failure of the right wing to take emergency measures to curb the worst of climate change.
